- The Sound the Lake Makes When the Ice Lets Go
If you’ve never heard it, it’s hard to describe. It starts as a low creak — almost like the lake is stretching after a long sleep. Then the edges soften. Dark patches of open water appear along the south-facing shoreline. And one morning, you walk down to the dock and the whole surface has shifted.… Read more: The Sound the Lake Makes When the Ice Lets Go - What Happens When a First-Time Bear Hunter Draws Her Bow on the First Evening?
She came with her husband. It was her first bear hunt. Two and a half hours on stand, first evening, and she took her bear with a bow. That’s all it took. The bear came in the way they usually do — quiet at first, then bold once it committed to the bait. It starts as a low grunt — almost more vibration than sound. Then the branches start breaking. You can hear the hooves hitting soft ground. And then, through the spruce and birch at the edge of a cutover, a bull steps out at thirty yards with his rack silhouetted against the September sky. That’s moose… Read more: What Does It Sound Like When a Bull Moose Answers Your Call? - The Evening the Forest Went Quiet
There’s a moment every bear hunter knows. You’ve been sitting for an hour. The mosquitoes have settled. The birds have gone quiet. The light is starting to change — that amber glow that only happens in late August when the sun drops low through the canopy. And then you hear it. A branch snaps. Something… Read more: The Evening the Forest Went Quiet
