Bears were feeding hard through August and September, building reserves before winter. The late-summer timing meant warm days cooling into comfortable evenings with long twilight hours that kept bears active and hunters engaged.

Most bear hunting camps operate within a single Wildlife Management Unit. That means if bear activity shifts — which it does, depending on food sources, weather, and pressure — the camp is stuck working one area.

What Did Mornings Look Like for Bear Hunters?

Because bear hunts are evening-focused, mornings belong to the angler.

Most of our 2019 bear hunters didn’t waste them.

Some headed out on Sandbar Lake at first light, working the shorelines for Walleye while the mist was still sitting on the water.

Others drove out to Kukukus or Arethusa for a change of scenery and a different species mix. A few even walked the logging roads near camp with a shotgun, picking up grouse along the forest edges before heading back to prep for the evening sit.

That combination of hunting and fishing in the same trip — the same day, even — is something we hear about all winter long when hunters call to start planning the next season.

Who Helped Make the Season Work?

A bear season doesn’t run on the camp alone.

The bait shops in Ignace kept our fishing hunters supplied. The local butcher handled meat processing after harvests. The Mary Berglund Community Health Centre was there for the one hunter who needed a hand mid-week. And the folks at R & C Repairs pulled through for a truck that decided September was a good time to be difficult.
