Moose Hunting in Northwestern Ontario — Rousseau’s Landing

Rousseau’s Landing sits on the shores of Sandbar Lake, just four miles north of Ignace on Highway 599, inside one of the only privately held properties within a Canadian Provincial Park.

For moose hunters, that location means something specific: direct access to some of the highest-density moose territory in the province, with the convenience of a drive-to lodge and the seclusion of genuine wilderness.

Our property borders four Wildlife Management Units giving your hunting party the rare advantage of applying for tags across multiple zones while staying at one home base.

Many of our moose hunters come to us because their usual camp has closed down, or because they’ve heard from fellow hunters that our multi-zone access improves their odds of drawing a tag.

Moose Hunting Season in the Ignace Area

Ontario’s moose season in our area typically runs from mid-September through the end of December, offering a long window that accommodates different hunting styles and schedules.

Early-season archery hunters arrive during the September rut, when bull moose are most responsive to calling.

This is widely regarded as one of the most exciting ways to hunt moose — drawing a massive bull in close through the boreal forest is an experience most hunters never forget.

Rifle season opens in October and continues into late fall. Rousseau’s Landing accommodates moose hunters from mid-September through the end of October, with the possibility of staying open longer weather permitting.

Rousseau’s Landing serves as a dependable basecamp for Moose hunting in Northwestern Ontario. Located on Sandbar Lake near Ignace, our drive-to location provides comfortable heated cabins, access to extensive logging roads and remote territory, and proximity to multiple Wildlife Management Units.

How the Hunt Works

Moose hunts at Rousseau’s Landing are self-guided, housekeeping-style experiences.

This means your group manages your own schedule, prepares your own meals in your fully equipped cabin kitchen, and hunts at your own pace.

For experienced moose hunters, this is the preferred way to do it — you know your group, you know your style, and you have the freedom to hunt how you want.

The Terrain

The landscape surrounding Rousseau’s Landing is classic Northwestern Ontario boreal forest — a mix of spruce, jack pine, birch, and poplar interspersed with lakes, rivers, bogs, and the network of logging roads and cutovers that moose thrive in.

Hunters leave very early in the morning, often come back to camp for lunch, then go out again until dark. The extensive network of logging roads and cutovers provides excellent access to prime Moose territory.

Fresh cutovers are prime feeding habitat, and the extensive logging road system provides access to areas that would otherwise require days of bushwhacking.

Rousseau’s location has the advantage of access to many logging roads, cutovers, and highways. The surrounding area affords many opportunities for Moose hunting. An abundance of wildlife in the area guarantees you the opportunity of having the hunt of a lifetime!

Multi-Zone Advantage:
WMU 15A, 15B, 12, and 13

One of the most significant advantages of hunting from Rousseau’s Landing is our access to four Wildlife Management Units from a single basecamp.

Your hunting party can apply for tags across WMU 15A, 15B, 12, and 13, which significantly improves your chances of drawing a tag through Ontario’s allocation system.

WMU 15A is recognized as one of Ontario’s highest moose density units.

The combination of multiple zones, strong moose populations, and accessible terrain makes this area one of the most productive moose hunting destinations in the province.

After The Harvest:
Meat Processing and Export

After a successful harvest, you’ll have access to our walk-in freezer to properly cool and store your meat. Field dressing and quartering typically happen in the field, with final processing at camp. We have moose hanging poles available on the property.

Most hunters transport their moose to the local butcher in Ignace to handle meat cutting and wrapping for wild game. There are also a few other town folk experienced in butchering who can help.

Combine Your Moose Hunt with Fishing

One of the unique advantages of hunting from Rousseau’s Landing is the opportunity to fish during your stay. Sandbar Lake is home to excellent Walleye and Northern Pike.

➝ Note that boat caches on surrounding lakes are typically closed down by early October, so Sandbar Lake is the primary fishing option during moose season.

Grouse and Small Game

The forests around Rousseau’s Landing are home to excellent grouse populations. Ruffed grouse and spruce grouse are abundant along the logging roads and forest edges. Bring a shotgun and an Ontario small game license, and you can add grouse hunting to your daily routine with no additional booking required.

Local Guides Available

While our moose hunts are self-guided, experienced local guides are available for hire in the Ignace area. These guides have years of experience in the surrounding territory and can significantly improve your chances, particularly if your group is new to the area or new to moose hunting.
